2021-04-06 · Aerococcus sanguinicola is a Gram-positive coccus first described in 2001. Infections in humans are rare but the use of 16S rRNA gene sequencing and improved phenotypic methods has facilitated the identification of A. sanguinicola. We report here 6 cases of A. sanguinicola bacteraemia, 2 of which were associated with infective endocarditis.

Thirdly, Aerococcus urinae tends only to cause UTIs in the Seventy-seven patients were identified (Aerococcus urinae n = 49, Aerococcus viridans n = 14, Aerococcus sanguinicola n = 13 and Aerococcus christensenii n = 1) corresponding to incidences of 14 cases per 1,000,000 inhabitants per year (A. urinae) and 3.5 cases per 1,000,000 inhabitants per year (A. sanguinicola and A.viridans). However, Aerococcus urinae and Aerococcus sanguinicola are now known to cause urinary tract infections and invasive infections. Aerococcus urinae was first recognized as a separate species in 1992 .

Since Aerococcus sanguinicola was designated as a species in 2001, only a few cases of bacteremia have been reported. The aim with this study was to describe the clinical presentation of A sanguinicola bacteremia and to determine the antibiotic susceptibility and the capacity of the bacteria to form biofilm and to induce platelet aggregation. Aerococcus spp. A. christensenii; A. sanguinicola; A. urinae; A. urinaehominis; A. viridans; Gram Stain. Gram positive cocci in pairs/tetrads/clusters (aerobic) Clinical Significance.

2018-10-01 · There are no studies on the recommendations for the antibiotic treatment of A. sanguinicola, but the genus Aerococcus is fairly sensitive to beta-lactams and vancomycin. The 2016 CLSI report introduced, for the first time, cutoffs for determining the antibiotic sensitivity of Aerococcus spp., both by microdilution and by disc diffusion.

MICs to erythromycin and levofloxacin were ≥0.5 and >4 μg/mL in 41% and 78% of A. sanguinicola and 17% and 23% of A. urinae isolates, respectively. Aerococcus sanguinicola is sensitive to most antibiotics likely to be used for empirical treatment of septicaemia such as β-lactams and vancomycin [5].

Aerococcus sanguinicola antibiotics

Aerococci have often been misidentified as streptococci in microbiology laboratories, leading to an underestimation of these bacteria as causes of human infections.

Most Aerococcus species will grow in Salt Broth but A. sanguinicola is the only species that is usually Bile Esculin (+). Commercial ID systems have limited abilities to ID A. urinae/A. viridans and will not recognize A. sanguinicola. The most distinguishing characteristic of Aerococcus sp. is their gram stain morphology of large GPCs in

We report here 6 cases of A. sanguinicola bacteraemia, 2 of which were associated with infective endocarditis. Both Aerococcus species were susceptible to β-lactam antibiotics with modal MICs for penicillin based on 308 A. urinae and 65 A. sanguinicola isolates in the MIC range of 0.03-0.06 mg/L . In the present study, penicillin susceptibilities were in agreement with these findings.

A. sanguinicola and A. urinae had low ceftriaxone, penicillin, and vancomycin MICs. MICs to erythromycin and levofloxacin were ≥0.5 and >4 μg/mL in 41% and 78% of A. sanguinicola and 17% and 23% of A. urinae isolates, respectively. The inocula of 10 7 cfu/mL (10 4 cfu/spot) were prepared from overnight agar cultures and suspended in 0.9% NaCl, and were applied with a 21 point multiple inoculator (Denley Instruments Ltd, Billinghurst, UK). The MIC for fluoroquinolones is relatively high, especially among A. sanguinicola isolates [.
